Board of Directors

Board meetings are the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.  Public Welcome!

The Library is governed by a Board of seven (7) Tonganoxie residents who have been appointed by the Mayor, plus the Mayor who serves as an ex officio board member. The appointed members serve four year terms.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Tonganoxie Public Library is to provide a positive environment for lifelong learning and enjoyment.  It strives to be the center of cultural activity, foster community partnerships and ensure that a dedicated and qualified staff provides the community with expertly selected materials and needed services and programs.  (Approved March 2007)

Policies

2008 Library Card Application (.pdf) - If you are a resident of Tonganoxie or one of the 14 counties that make up the Northeast Kansas Library System, you qualify for a card.  We ask to see proof of address when the card is created. 

Loan Periods:
Two Weeks (14 Days): Videos and DVDs
Three Weeks (21 Days):  Books, Books on Tape/CD and Magazines

Renewal:
Renewals may be made in person, over the telephone or through the NExpress online catalog using your card number and PIN. 
All materials may be renewed up to 2 times after the initial check-out, if no one else has requested the item.

Limits on Borrowing:
Books, Picture Books, Magazines - Unlimited
DVDs or Videos - 3
Books on Tape/CD - 5

Volunteers

The Library would not be able to function without the help and dedication of our volunteers.  Volunteers work the circulation desk, help with special projects, and prepare books for check-out.  If you are interested in volunteering at the Library, contact Sharon Moreland at 845-3281.

The Friends of the Library works to support the Library by sponsoring fundraising and awareness-raising events, such as the Adult Winter Reading Program, 5K and 10K run/walk at Tonganoxie Days, and the Halloween Party.  To join or for more information, contact the Library at (913) 845-3281.

  • Virtual Tour—Visit the Library before you visit the Library (we have a new desk now)!
  • Audiobooks—Listen to a book on tape or CD while you work or drive.  Download an audiobook from Kansas Audio Books, Music and More! with your Kansas Library Card 
  • Wireless Access—In Sptember 2005, the Library became a Wireless Hot Spot through Sunflower Broadband!  Please note that our Policy for Information Access and Internet Safety applies.
  • Story Time—Mondays at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room. 
  • NExpress Catalog—In 2005, we joined a consortium of over 20 libraries with combined holdings of over 2.5 million volumes.  Use your new Library card and PIN number to place holds on books and they’ll be delivered to this Library for you to pick up!
  • Late Hours—Open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  Open Saturdays 9-1.
  • Community Room—The room is available for use during Library hours. Reservation Form.
  • Genealogy—Materials in print and on microfilm, along with a microfilm reader/printer, are available.  We have the Tonganoxie Mirror on microfilm from 1882 to 2003.
  • Reference—We have encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs, tax forms, foreign-language dictionaries and more.
  • Kansas Library Card—Access Worldbook encyclopedia and Infotrac Web from your home computer, along with several other subscription databases for Free! Sign up at the Library. 
  • Interlibrary Loan—Borrow books and more from any library in Kansas.  If we don’t have it, we’ll do our best to get it for you.
  • Newspapers—Read the The Mirror, The Lawrence Journal-World and Kansas City Star in the Library.
  • Computers—All 11 of our public access computers have Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer installed.  There are games installed on the PC in the children’s area and we have two “Quick Look-up Stations” that you can use to search our catalog or check your e-mail.
  • Young Adult Area—We all need our space—check out our YA books and magazines in the YA area in the front of the Library.

  • Strategic Plan—The Board, staff and members of the Community worked together to create a long-term plan for the Library.
